Exploring “The Point” in Cherry Grove: Where the Ocean Meets the Inlet
If there’s one thing any parent knows, it’s that mixing an energetic toddler with crashing ocean waves can sometimes be more exhausting than relaxing. You spend half the time holding them back from the surf and the other half reapplying sunscreen to a moving target! But on our family’s trips to North Myrtle Beach, we’ve discovered a hidden gem that changes the game completely.
Just a scenic stroll north of Oceans Edge lies "The Point" in Cherry Grove. This is where the mighty Atlantic Ocean meets the gentle currents of the Cherry Grove Inlet. It is, without a doubt, our family’s favorite spot for a morning of stress-free exploration, coastal adventure, and incredible value (because nature's best attractions are totally free!).
Here is why your family—whether you are traveling with tiny tots, teenagers, or grandparents—will absolutely fall in love with The Point.
Why The Point is a Must-Do for Families
When two bodies of water meet, magic happens. The landscape at The Point is constantly shifting with the tides, meaning no two visits are exactly the same. It’s an incredible place to sneak a little natural science education into your vacation while focusing on family bonding.
Here is what makes this spot so special:
Toddler-Approved Tidal Pools: At low tide, the receding water reveals expansive sandbars and leaves behind shallow, sun-warmed tidal pools. These pools are completely protected from the crashing surf, creating a natural kiddie pool where your little ones can splash safely while you actually get to sit and breathe in the salty air.
A Fisherman’s Dream: If you have anglers in the family, the rushing currents where the inlet mixes with the ocean create an all-you-can-eat buffet for local fish. It is a prime location for surf fishing from the sand or casting a line into the drift.
Nature & Wildlife: Looking across the inlet, you'll see the pristine, undeveloped shores of Waites Island. We love playing "I Spy" with the kids here. Keep your eyes peeled for diving pelicans, scurrying ghost crabs, and if you are lucky, dolphins playing in the inlet currents!
The Ultimate Photo Op: The swirling waters, the untouched island in the background, and the dramatic sandbars make this arguably the most Instagrammable spot in all of North Myrtle Beach. Sunrise and sunset here are truly memorable.
Navigating the Realities: A Local’s Tip
Let's be honest: parking near The Point during the busy summer months can be a bit of a headache. The public lots fill up fast, and hauling beach gear from a car blocks away isn't fun.
Our workaround? Don't drive! Because Oceans Edge is located right here in Cherry Grove, getting to The Point is a breeze. It’s no more than a 5 minute walk! We love to load up a beach wagon and take a leisurely, scenic walk up the shoreline. You get to skip the parking traffic entirely and enjoy the beautiful beach houses along the way.
Coming Home to Oceans Edge
There is nothing quite like the feeling of happy, sun-drenched exhaustion after a few hours exploring the sandbars. When the kids have collected their fill of seashells and the tide starts to roll back in, heading back to Oceans Edge is incredibly convenient.
Knowing you can easily rinse off those sandy toes, throw the wet bathing suits straight into the washer, and whip up a quick lunch in our spacious kitchen makes the whole outing feel effortless. It’s all about making those beautiful beach memories without the usual travel stress.
We would love to host your family's next North Myrtle Beach getaway. Come experience the Southern hospitality of Oceans Edge, and see the magic of The Point for yourself!
